Hamtramck Students Become Inventors for a Day

A group of Hamtramck High School students were able to see what a career inengineering and business could look like last month. The U.S Patent Midwest Regional Office, which administers licenses and trademark registrations to Michigan’s inventors, camelto the high school’s media centerito visit Hamtramck’s very own student robotics team.

That afternoon, the groups worked together, putting their shared set of skills together, bringing their ideas into reality.

The robotics team divided into six imaginary companies to brainstorm their inventions. The student groups spent the next couple hours working together to develop the ideas, sketch out their concepts, and present them to advisors with the U.S. Patent Office.MGwendolyn Blackwell, the Office’s Supervisory Patent Examiner, said she was very impressed with the students’ ideas. At one point, Blackwell gave the students her business cards in order to contact her at the Federal Office.

Ahmed Hakim, Behavior Specialist at Hamtramck High School, said he was happy that the

U.S Patent Office could see how well the students worked together. “they promised us that they will share what they witnessed with their superiors and continud this beautiful partnership with Hamtramck High School,” Hakim said. “they will help us with [our] STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Program as well.”
