Last July, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced the awardees for her annual “Volunteer of the Year” award. The four awardees were Ann T. Fillmore from Coleman, Kimberly Ismail from Dearborn, Michelle Shepherd from Rochester, and Richard Stringfield from Saginaw. “Kimberly Ismail serves the Dearborn community by helping those in need, no matter what the cause. She makes a difference in the community and touches lives by volunteering in a variety of ways,” the Office of the Governor said in a press release. Kimberly has taken a leadership role in helping refugees have access to food and resources. She introduced a “Arrive Alive” distracted driving campaign to Michigan, organizes a hunger walk for Forgotten Harvest and has executed a book drive for museums and libraries. Kimberly spearheads food, clothing and gift drives to help those less fortunate during the holidays. She has also helped provide children with backpacks, books and toys. She simply does whatever her community needs.
Family, friends and staff are inspired daily by her integrity, patience and never-ending kindness. “Her passion for volunteerism and her vision for world harmony is truly inspiring,” said Glenn Maleyko, superintendent of Dearborn Public Schools. “Her involvement in local, state and national charities is extensive, and her devotion to so many different causes is remarkable. She is selfless and tireless when it comes to helping others.”
Kimberly also serves as the Vice President of the League of Women Voters of Dearborn and Dearborn Heights. The Yemeni American News asked Kimberly on what this award means to her, she responded, “this award means to me that whatever work I’m doing out there however small – I’m making a positive impact on behalf of those that live in poverty and that means the world to me.”
When asked about he she heard about it, she said “I first heard about this from receiving a background check form to be filled out for Lansing. I knew something was happening”
The Yemeni American News asked Kimberly for advice to the younger generation. She said,
“my advice to our younger generation is to always show empathy and give back to your community. Doing God’s work is the most fulfilling a human being can do for others and oneself.”
The Yemeni American News team congratulates Kimberly on this award. Well-deserved!
