A look at the most dangerous intersections in Dearborn

The intersection of Michigan Ave and Oakwood Blvd is the most dangerous crossing in Dearborn, police records show.

Michigan and Oakwood saw 122 crashes last year – an average of one accident every three days.

The intersection sits at the start of downtown West Dearborn from the east side, close to where Michigan Avenue goes down to from three to two lanes, creating a bottleneck of traffic.

The second most dangerous intersection is the other end of downtown West Dearborn – Michigan Ave and Outer Dr with 103 crashes in 2025.

The downtown area has witnessed an impressive revival over the past decade. The neighborhood has gone from a struggling business district with dozens of shuttered stores to one of the most lively and thriving areas in Southeast Michigan.

That transformation has especially accelerated in the past five years.

Both sides of Michigan Avenue are lined with coffee shops, restaurants, office spaces and retail stores. Peace Park West, which opened in 2024, added a much needed public green space to the area.

But downtown West Dearborn may be becoming a victim of its own success.

The influx of diners and residents – as well as commuters crossing the area to get to suburbs farther west one way or to the east side of Dearborn and Detroit in the opposite direction – is causing traffic problems, as highlighted by the data.

The traffic has also been an issue for pedestrians trying to cross to the other side of Michigan to go from one business to another without changing their parking spot.

As the city discusses revamping roads and infrastructure across Dearborn, it would be wise to consider diverting traffic away from Michigan Ave, install bike lanes and pedestrianize parts of the street.

Other dangerous intersections in Dearborn include Ford Rd and Greenfield with 88 crashes last year; Ford and Schaefer with 86; and the Ford, Michigan and Wyoming area with 77.

Reckless driving has been a persistent issue in Dearborn despite the city’s efforts to address the problem, including stepping up enforcement, reinstating the traffic school program and adding hundreds of speed bumps across Dearborn.

The persistence of crashes does not only hurt the people and cars involved in accidents; it drives up insurance costs for all drivers.

Dearborn has some of the most expensive insurance prices in Michigan, which, in turn, has the second highest rates in the country.
