DEARBORN, Mich. – In the wake of massive slip-ups from the federal government and continued rancor and disorganization in the Trump administration, local government officials are taking the lead in calming the public here in Dearborn.

This week, after Gov. Gretchen Whitmer justified a state-wide “stay in place” order due to the need to buy time after a sluggish federal government response, President Trump began tweeting attacks against her.

“Failing Michigan governor must work harder and be much more proactive. We are pushing her to get the job done,” Trump tweeted.

It’s a remarkable moment in our nation’s history. The President of the United States was asked on Friday what he wants America’s governors to do during the middle of a deadly pandemic, and Donald Trump’s response was, ““All I want them to do — very simple — I want them to be appreciative.”

In dark times like this, the stability of local government shines through. City Council President Susan Dabaja, State Rep. Abdullah Hammoud and others helped bring masks and other donated personal protective equipment (PPE) to Beaumont in Dearborn. Dabaja has become an avatar for the generosity of our community, a stark contrast to the quid-pro-quo style of Trump, who seems to be trading PPE for compliments.

City Councilwoman Leslie Herrick has been posting updates on city policy due to COVID-19 on every single social media group available to keep residents informed. During this time of crisis, Herrick has been acting as the communicator-in-chief for the city council.

School Board President Hussein Berry has been acting as a calm voice in the storm, reassuring parents and students in an interview last week that “Anything you can think of, the school district’s emergency response team has already thought of it, and they’ve got a plan.” Dr. Glenn Maleyko, the superintendent of Dearborn Public Schools, has taken to posting updates on his blog in order to produce the rapid updates needed for parents and teachers.

County Commissioner Sam Baydoun has done a series of media appearances to talk about what’s going on. Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-Dearborn) has been posting daily updates combining all of the information about Coronavirus via email and social media.

In an era defined by partisan rancor, local officials are taking charge. It’s unfortunate that their hard work is stifled by a federal government unwilling to accept its role.

The United States is a nation, not a constellation of separate states. Times like this require a coordinated response. Nothing could be less true in a pandemic than the quote from Ronald Reagan on August 12 of 1986, “The nine most terrifying words in the English language are: I’m from the Government, and I’m here to help.” We want the federal government to come and do what only it can do.

If only we had federal leadership willing to do it. Now, more than ever, our local cities and schools are standing as an example for what Democracy needs to look like in America. We should never accept the idea of a dysfunctional government – if Government isn’t working, it’s because the people in charge aren’t working for us. Thankfully, at least here in Dearborn, they are.
