DEARBORN, Mich. — Dearborn Public Schools (DPS) announced today that families with children in school will be able to pick up free, daily meal packages for each child that will include enough food for breakfast and lunch starting Tuesday, March 17.

The sites where meal pickup will be available is at Fordson, Edsel Ford and Dearborn high schools, McCollough-Unis, Salina Intermediate and Woodworth Middle School. Students will not need to be present for parents to pick up a meal, and the student does not need to attend that school for parents to pick up a meal. A designated person can collect meals for multiple children. Meals for Saturday and Sunday can be picked up on Friday.

The district is planning to offer these grab-and-go meals until at least April 3, and may continue the program depending on conditions.

“We appreciate the patience of our families and community as we all try to adjust to this sudden change from closing schools,” said Dr. Glenn Maleyko, the DPS superintendent.

School Board President Hussein Berry said he’s “very happy and satisfied” with the job Dr. Maleyko and all the school staff are doing.

Local food pantries are also stepping up their efforts. Reverand Terri Pilarski of Christ Episcopal Church in Dearborn said their food pantry remains open, and if someone calls 313-565-8450 their staff will get food ready for them at the door. The local non-profit group, “Blessings in A Backpack” will also continue food distribution throughout the COVID-19 outbreak. Meals On Wheels continue to be served on schedule.
