HAMTRAMCK, Mich. – Hamtramck Public Schools is looking for dedicated Special Education Teachers for the district, and they’re willing to pay extra for it.

Coming from the partnership between the Hamtramck Public Schools District and the Hamtramck Federation of Teachers, HPS is willing to offer a $15,000 annual bonus for five years of employment with Hamtramck Public Schools as a Special Education instructor.

“In order to fill vacant special education instructional positions (Autism Spectrum Categorical Classrooms) and related service positions (school psychologist, school social worker, and speech pathologist), as well as to recruit additional staff to enhance the services in the district’s Special Education Department, HPS is committed to offering signing bonus pay up to $15,000 on a recurring annual basis for up to five years,” reads a press release from Hamtramck Public Schools.

Of course, it’s not quite as simple as just that. HPS says that teachers or student teachers will need to successfully complete a program that offers an Autism Endorsement to add to their teaching license, among other requirements:

  • Matriculate in the accredited program through a higher education institution within one year of hire.
  • Successfully complete the degree within two years of matriculation.
  • Pass the appropriate Michigan test for teacher certification.
  • Add the new endorsement on their teaching license.
  • Enter into a binding five-year commitment to employment as a special education teacher assigned to the ASD Categorical Classroom.

“The primary goal for entering a memorandum of understanding is to ensure our students continue to receive high-quality education so they may succeed and transform the future,” said Superintendent Nabil Nagi. “We hope passionate and compassionate educators apply for the open positions and take advantage of the opportunity to advance their own education.”

The Special Education Department at Hamtramck Public Schools serves students aged 3 to 26 who have been evaluated to need intervention.

From diversity in culture, race, personalities and abilities, HPS is truly a place where everyone feels seen and appreciated. We look forward to welcoming exceptional candidates to our team of passionate and dedicated professionals.”
