Last issue we sent out a press release mentioning that Hamtramck Public Schools have purchased the building on Hanley street formerly known as The Academy of International Studies from Harper Global Enterprises, LLC.
Well it is now official and the school name will be called Hanley Street Elementary School. It will be located on 3056 Hanley Street in Hamtramck, Michigan.
The school will service students from kindergarten through 8th grade. It will be a full day of school for the kindergarten students. ESL Programming services will be included in the school as well as restorative practices.
Hamtramck Public Schools Superintendent Thomas Niczay said his message for parents and students is, “We want that school to serve the neighborhood. There were about 270 students that lived in that area and attended the former school. What we want to do is to keep the same plan in place so that people attending that school beforehand will continue to go to that school and feel safe and so on. There will be a new staff there obviously. But the message though is we want to serve that neighborhood as a public school.”

Mr. Niczay later added that the goal for Hanley Street Elementary School is to, “serve the academic needs of the students and the emotional needs of the students as well. We do want to make sure we educate the child. We want to make sure they have the necessary academic skills to do whatever it is they want to do. We also want to make sure their social and emotional skill is taught there. We want the students to be confident and to be able to be successful no matter where they go to for high school or no matter what walk they have in life. So if kids are able to handle their own emotions and feelings and so on, and have that confidence to be successful, that is half the battle.”
In a couple of tours Mr. Niczay has had of the school, he said he seen some really great kids. He also mentioned that the building has been remodeled. It has central air conditioning and is very up to date.
“I can see why people want to stay in that building,” Niczay said.
Hanley Elementary is now accepting applications for all grades. You can sign your kid up at the Roosevelt building located on 3201 Roosevelt Street, Hamtramck, MI.
