In Michigan’s Coronavirus outbreak, the cases are beginning to rise exponentially. Some news organizations have reported that the Detroit Metro Area has experienced the fastest rise in case numbers for any metro area in the United States.
As Journalist Violet Ikonomova put it, Detroit’s initial spread is faster than what was initially experienced in New York City, which is now the nation’s leading hotspot for the spread of COVID-19.
Governor Whitmer’s administration has submitted a disaster declaration to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The declaration would request emergency funds in order to combat the rise in Coronavirus cases.
Whitmer also announced that Detroit-area hospitals are almost at capacity, with Henry Ford Health System announcing that two of their hospitals have reached the limit of people they can treat for the illness. William Beaumont Health System is also close to capacity as of yesterday.
The United States, as of today, has surpassed Italy and China and became the country with the most active Coronavirus Cases.
Wayne County (excluding Detroit) has reported 142 new cases since yesterday, bringing the total to 575 cases. 11 new deaths from the virus have also been reported since yesterday.
The total new cases for a few cities are as follows:
- Dearborn: Five new cases for a total of 26.
- Dearborn Heights: eight new cases for a total of 27.
- Detroit: a total of 851.
- Grosse Point Communities: four new cases for a total of 28.
- Hamtramck: one new case for a total of eight.
- Highland Park: five new cases for a total of 13.
- Taylor: 14 new cases for a total of 50.
As of last night, Sunday evening, Hamtramck had fifteen cases
