The blow cut deep into her skin, tearing away bits of flesh that left physical wounds requiring 17 stitches \u2014 and a psychological wound that left her fearful of living in Minnesota, she said.<\/p>\n

Yet on Tuesday, Asma Jama forgave the woman who attacked her.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn front of everybody here, I do forgive you, and I hope that you choose love over hate,\u201d Jama said to Jodie Marie Burchard-Risch, who was sentenced Tuesday in Anoka County District Court.<\/p>\n

Burchard-Risch, 44, of Ramsey, pleaded guilty in October to third-degree assault in the attack, which took place in 2015 inside an Applebee\u2019s restaurant in Coon Rapids.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday, Judge Nancy J. Logering sentenced her to 180 days in jail, five years of probation, and mandatory alcohol testing and treatment, according to court documents.<\/p>\n

Prosecutors have said they declined to charge her with a hate crime because the penalties actually would have been less severe, given the injuries she caused Jama.<\/p>\n

Jama, an ethnic Somali who speaks English, Somali and Swahili, came to Minnesota from Kenya in 2000.<\/p>\n

On Oct. 30, 2015, she was inside the Applebee\u2019s, wearing a hijab and speaking Swahili, according to her account and court documents.<\/p>\n

Burchard-Risch and her husband, who were seated in the next booth, became upset that Jama \u201cwas speaking in a foreign language,\u201d according to a criminal complaint.<\/p>\n

Restaurant managers tried to get Burchard-Risch to leave, but she yelled and threw her drink on Jama. She then \u201csmashed a beer mug across (Jama\u2019s) face in a \u2019round house punch\u2019 motion and fled,\u201d the complaint states.<\/p>\n

Burchard-Risch pleaded guilty but maintained that she threw the mug, rather than delivered it as an extension of a punch. Jama required 17 stitches to her nose, eyebrow and lower lip.<\/p>\n

Burchard-Risch declined to speak Tuesday. But Jama did, according to courtroom video from local TV stations.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat you did to me that day wasn\u2019t good. You should never do anything like that to anybody,\u201d Jama said in comments recorded by WCCO-TV.<\/p>\n

Following the attack, Jama said she felt scared to stay in Minnesota, but she has since said her outlook has improved \u2014 albeit only somewhat.<\/p>\n

\u201cI used to be a care-free person and now I can\u2019t go anywhere by myself,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Burchard-Risch\u2019s attorney, Rodd Tschida, told the judge, in part: \u201cI don\u2019t see her as a lunatic. I don\u2019t see her as a racist. I see her as someone, not unlike many others that come before the court, that has an alcohol problem that brought her here.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t have any ill feelings toward you. I just want you \u2014 at the end of all this \u2014 to understand we are all the same. It doesn\u2019t matter what\u2019s on my head. It doesn\u2019t matter the color of my skin, we are all the same human beings. We are fighting for the same rights,\u201d Jama said in comments taped by KARE-TV.<\/p>\n

Here is Asma Jama\u2019s statement to Jodie in court:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Jodie, what you did to me that day wasn\u2019t good. You should never do anything like that to anybody. But I just wanted to tell you in front of everybody today that I do forgive you.<\/p>\n

My religion teaches me to forgive so I can get on with my life. If I hold a grudge, if I hold the hate you hold towards me against you, it\u2019s not going to serve me well.\u00a0 So in front of everybody here, I do forgive you and I hope that you choose love over hate.<\/p>\n

I really do because it makes your life easier. Having hate just eats at you, it\u2019s not good.\u00a0 I hope you find what you\u2019re looking for at the end of your journey. I know you\u2019ve had just as long of a year as I\u2019ve had.<\/p>\n

My intentions toward you are not bad. I don\u2019t have any ill feelings towards you. I just want you to understand at the end of all this that we are all the same. It doesn\u2019t matter what\u2019s on my head, it doesn\u2019t matter the color of my skin, we are all the same human beings, we are fighting for the same rights.<\/p>\n

I am an American citizen and I would fight for it today as much as you would.\u00a0 So I just want you to understand you hit somebody you didn\u2019t know anything about.\u00a0 I do speak English, I speak very well English, I work every single day just like you do, Jodie.<\/p>\n

So I hope you learn at the end of all this we are all the same, there\u2019s no difference between me and you.<\/p>\n
