What began 28 years ago as a determined effort to support promising young people has grown into one of the most respected and anticipated scholarship traditions in the Dearborn community and beyond.

Year after year, the Association has remained steadfast in its belief that when students are given the tools, encouragement, and recognition they need, entire families and future generations rise with them.

On July 31st, 2026, the Yemeni American Association once again gathered the community for its annual Scholarship Awards Dinner at Byblos Banquets in Dearborn. The evening brought together students and their proud families, educators, community leaders, elected officials, sponsors, and longtime supporters. It was more than a ceremony—it was a living reminder of how far the community has come and how deeply it continues to invest in the next generation.

Daifallah Asoufy, current President of the Yemeni American Association, told the Yemeni American News that he was delighted with yet another successful event.

“In its 28th year, the YAA has been successful in gaining the people’s support to sponsor such an ongoing event, ” Asoufy said.

“We continue our goal of helping the youth and encouraging them to keep going. We are here as volunteers and committed to its success.”

He noted the standards students must meet and the collective effort behind the program.

“Students need to earn a 3.5 GPA, and with the support of the scholarship committee, it was a successful event—true teamwork.”

Asoufy emphasized the deeper impact the recognition can have on young people.

“The Association will continue the program to motivate youth to keep achieving. Sometimes it can be a turning point, since they receive citations from members of Congress and elected officials. It boosts their self-esteem and encourages them to accomplish more milestones in their academic journey and career.”

Over the years, the YAA scholarship program has become far more than an annual event. It has evolved into a symbol of hope, opportunity, and collective responsibility.

Generation after generation of students have walked across that stage carrying not only their own achievements, but the pride of parents who sacrificed, the encouragement of mentors who believed in them, and the quiet strength of a community that refuses to let talent go unsupported. Many of those early recipients have returned as professionals, parents, and community leaders themselves—proof that the circle of support continues to expand.

The most recent celebration in Dearborn once again highlighted the transformative power of education and the importance of sustained investment in youth.

Through the generosity of sponsors, the dedication of volunteers, and the partnership of community organizations, the Yemeni American Association continues to open doors that might otherwise remain closed. Each scholarship represents more than financial assistance; it is a public affirmation that a student’s hard work, resilience, and dreams matter.

The evening program, MC’d by Dr. Khalid Kaid was filled with inspiring speeches, heartfelt personal stories, and moments of genuine recognition. Families beamed with pride.

The student speaker, Rayan Hussein spoke of the obstacles they overcame and the ambitions that now feel more attainable. Community leaders reflected on the decades of effort it has taken to build this tradition—work that has never sought the spotlight, yet has quietly shaped countless lives. The strength, unity, and quiet determination of the Yemeni American community were on full display, reminding everyone present why this gathering has become such a cherished landmark.

After 28 years of excellence, the YAA Scholarship Awards have earned a special place in the life of the community.

Many describe the banquet as “the talk of the town” —a night when people set aside daily concerns to celebrate achievement, honor culture, and reaffirm their shared belief in a brighter future. It is an evening that strengthens bonds across generations and renews the collective commitment to education as a pathway to opportunity and dignity.

The journey continues. With every scholarship awarded, the Yemeni American Association writes another chapter of success. It proves, year after year, that when a community chooses to invest in its young people—not just once, but consistently over decades—it invests in something far greater than individual achievement. It invests in the promise of generations still to come.

YANAdel Mozip For nearly three decades, the Yemeni American Association (YAA) has carried forward a quiet but powerful vision: that education is the most lasting investment a community can make in its future.
