About 400 students at Dickinson West Elementary School in Hamtramck recently received a brand new pair of shoes each thanks to Lace Up Detroit.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lace Up Detroit is a nonprofit organization that<\/span> provides new shoes and boots to underserved women and children. The organization hosted a Spring Shoe Drive on April 28 at Dickinson West.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>We\u2019re excited that they had the opportunity to come to our school and\u00a0 to be a blessing to our students,\u201d said Principal Leola Banks. \u201cOur students are excited, they love the new shoes. We are just so thankful that they had this opportunity.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Lace Up Detroit volunteers and leaders were present to fit each child for his or her new shoes.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe kids are loving it,\u201d said Board Member Marianne Denomme. \u201dThey\u2019re excited to wear their new shoes and they don\u2019t want to get them dirty. They\u2019re talking about riding bikes in their new shoes. You can see that the shoes really are needed.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Dickinson West staff were also on hand and enjoyed seeing their students\u2019 enthusiasm.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMy kids are very excited to receive new shoes,\u201d said second grade teacher Jazmin Gonzalez. \u201cThey\u2019re so happy that they were able to get a whole new pair for free.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The students were just as eager to talk about the event as the adults in attendance.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201dI feel so good in my new shoes because I love my new shoes,\u201d one student said. \u201cThey\u2019re so pretty.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Another student shared her excitement about having shoes in her size.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI feel so great about my shoes because they\u2019re the only ones that fit perfectly on me,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lace Up Detroit isn\u2019t stopping with Dickinson West. The organization has plans to meet the needs of even more Detroit-area students in the future.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe want to continue to reach out in Detroit and the surrounding area,\u201d Denomme said. \u201cWe\u2019re looking for more opportunities where there\u2019s a need.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
