The Hamtramck High School (HHS) varsity basketball team went head to head with staff and alumni at a special venue\u2014Little Caesars Arena.<\/p>\n
The team had the unique opportunity to play at the home of the Detroit Pistons as part of a celebration of student success.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe purpose was to celebrate our students,\u201d said HHS Vice Principal Ayanna Dance. \u201cOur juniors just got done with a round of state testing and our seniors will soon be alumni of Hamtramck High School.\u201d<\/p>\n
Dance hopes to make the game an annual event, which also featured members of the school band.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a wonderful opportunity to play on the home court of the Pistons,\u201d said Music Teacher Tom Course. \u201cAnd a great opportunity for all of our students.\u201d<\/p>\n
Head Basketball Coach Dejai Faster described the event as one of both opportunity and unity.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe game brought Hamtramck together\u2014all races, shapes and sizes,\u201d he said. \u201cThe event was for fellowship and camaraderie.\u201d<\/p>\n
Several students also discussed both the game\u2019s, and their school\u2019s, ability to bring people together.<\/p>\n
\u201dWe\u2019re a family,\u201d said HHS team member Tyrecce Eanders. \u201cWe show each other love. No one will go to our school without being a friend with someone. We don\u2019t leave anyone alone.\u201d<\/p>\n
Another student and team member Laith Alhadwan also praised the unique education he receives at HHS.<\/p>\n
\u201cNot many students have opportunities like Hamtramck High School has given us,\u201d he said. \u201cWe have so many different people from so many different backgrounds.<\/p>\n
We\u2019re so culturally diverse. It\u2019s something you don\u2019t find anywhere else.\u201d<\/p>\n
