Hamtramck Public Schools (HPS) Tau Beta School Principal Alia Hamka recently received a special tribute from the State of Michigan for her selection as the valedictorian of the first Hamtramck Citizen’s Academy.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Hamtramck Police Department\u2019s Citizen\u2019s Academy is a 21-hour block of instruction designed to give the public a working knowledge of the police department\u2019s personnel and policies.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Hamka was chosen as valedictorian based on her numerous achievements. These include her 20 years of experience as an educator with a commitment to fostering inclusive and enriching learning experiences. In addition, she has an impressive three master\u2019s degrees in Early Childhood Educations, TESOL (teaching English as a second language) and leadership. She is also pursuing a doctorate degree in second language instruction.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAlia\u2019s achievements as both an educator and leader are truly inspiring,\u201d the tribute, signed by 7th district State Representative Tonya Myers-Phillips. \u201cHer dedication, vision, and tireless efforts have left an undeniable mark on her community, and we celebrate her success as valedictorian with pride and admiration.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Hamka joined the HPS team as Tau Beta principal in August 2024. She has participated in leadership programs such as the Galileo Leadership Academy and Wayne Future Leadership Academy. Her specialized training in the Orton Gillingham approach, which involves teaching literacy to students with dyslexia, and Leveled Literacy Intervention for struggling readers, help support diverse learning needs.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cParticipating in the first-ever Hamtramck\u00a0 Police Citizens Academy was a great honor and an opportunity for future partnerships and collaborations with the Hamtramck Police Department,\u201d Hamka said. \u201cThe academy is what collaboration, cooperation and community engagement is all about.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Hamka\u2019s dedication to education and community as well as her selection as valedictorian drew praise from HPS Interim Superintendent and Chief Financial Officer James Larson-Schidler.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAlia\u2019s unwavering commitment to lifelong learning, strong leadership, and dedication to education have made\u2014and will continue to make\u2014a meaningful and lasting impact on students, families, and colleagues throughout our district,\u201d he said. \u201cHer recognition as valedictorian is a true reflection of the passion, integrity, and vision she brings to her work each day.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
