Detroit, MI \u2013 Beginning June 15, 2023, Wayne County residents facing foreclosure can enter payment plans to take care of back property taxes for 2021 and previous years.<\/p>\n

The Wayne County Treasurer\u2019s\u00a0Office offers\u00a0several\u00a0payment\u00a0plan\u00a0options\u00a0to\u00a0help \u00a0taxpayers\u00a0avoid foreclosure and\u00a0pay back property taxes\u00a0over time periods:<\/p>\n

Interest Reduction Stipulated Payment Agreement (IRSPA).This plan reduces the interest rate from 18 to 6 percent. Eligible taxpayers must own and live in the home and have a Principal Residency Exemption\u00a0(PRE)\u00a0and identification that proves residency.<\/p>\n

Stipulated Payment Agreement (SPA).\u00a0This allows a\u00a0payment plan over a\u00a010-month\u00a0time period. The\u00a0taxpayer\u00a0can\u00a0avoid foreclosure\u00a0if\u00a0payments are\u00a0made according to\u00a0the agreed-upon schedule.<\/p>\n

Pay\u00a0As You Stay Payment Agreement (PAYSPA).\u00a0This is a program offered by municipalities. Residents must apply\u00a0and be approved\u00a0for their local municipality\u2019s Poverty Tax Exemption(PTE). Eligible participants will be notified\u00a0of\u00a0a reduced amount and have the option of paying a lump sum or enrolling\u00a0in\u00a0a PAYSPA.<\/p>\n

Veterans and\u00a0first\u00a0responders\u00a0may enter a payment plan with no down payment.<\/p>\n

In addition to the payment plans, residents can\u00a0still\u00a0apply for grant funding through\u00a0the Michigan Homeowners Assistance Fund (MIHAF). The program\u00a0provides American Rescue\u00a0Act\u00a0dollars to help Michiganders\u00a0who were impacted by COVID-19pay back taxes and for other needs. To date, more than\u00a0$20million\u00a0has gone to assist\u00a05,500\u00a0Wayne County\u00a0residents pay\u00a0their\u00a0property taxes.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe strongly urge Wayne County residents to apply\u00a0as soon as possible\u00a0because MIHAF\u00a0funds are\u00a0limited\u00a0,\u201d\u00a0said Wayne County Treasurer Eric R.\u00a0Sabree.<\/p>\n
