{"id":6046,"date":"2022-06-13T10:22:12","date_gmt":"2022-06-13T14:22:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/yemeniamerican.com\/en\/?p=6046"},"modified":"2022-06-13T17:42:03","modified_gmt":"2022-06-13T21:42:03","slug":"parents-allege-hfec-principal-fostered-a-racist-environment-at-the-award-winning-dearborn-school","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/yemeniamerican.com\/en\/parents-allege-hfec-principal-fostered-a-racist-environment-at-the-award-winning-dearborn-school\/","title":{"rendered":"Parents Allege HFEC Principal fostered a racist environment at the award-winning Dearborn school."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Simon Albaugh \u2013 Yemeni American News<\/p>\n<p>Dearborn, Mich. \u2013 Henry Ford Early College is at an uproar after allegations surfaced that the school\u2019s principal made disparaging remarks against Yemeni and certain Lebanese students, as well as a complaint of him physically mishandling another student.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1HM6I0nc2pTVMAdoIAiWyaR1yZLmyh_CyQkDpfa0z4S8\/edit?fbclid=IwAR3tldnrUzLka-PzBFa0dttAhjEe3prFd7WCNj1EOUsHESszky0LTSKtey8\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">google doc prepared and shared by Samraa Luqman<\/span><\/a>, a candidate for State Representative in Michigan\u2019s District 3, alleges that principal Majed Fadlallah made disparaging remarks against certain Yemeni students, saying \u201cif you don\u2019t do well, I\u2019m going to send you back to Yemen\u201d and telling a student to thank cafeteria workers for food, because of the famine that\u2019s currently decimating Yemen.<\/p>\n<p>The google drive also details a complaint by one student in which principal Fadlallah grabbed a student by his arms and pushed him against the wall in order to threaten the student after cheating on a test. The student was later expelled from the early college program for what the student says was a mistaken identification and later dropped out of Dearborn Public Schools entirely.<\/p>\n<p>Students and parents at a <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/dearbornpublicschools\/videos\/2562137400588390\">Dearborn Board of Education meeting last Tuesday<\/a><\/span> spoke both in favor of the principal and against him, with a few talking about how the principal has affected theirs or their childrens\u2019 lives.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am the mother of an exceptional student in Dearborn who has been failed by many staff and especially leaders in this district,\u201d said Amal Harhara, a mother who made a public comment at the board meeting. \u201cMy son was physically, verbally and mentally abused by your staff member. It was my son.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To make the meeting more complicated, Luqman\u2019s google doc details a staff member who encouraged students to come to the meeting to speak in favor of principal Fadlallah.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy son wanted to speak to you directly today but because we have educators and community members who are coming here today to publicly dismiss, ignore or outright erase patterns of ethnic intimidation and racism, I decided to keep him safe and at home,\u201d Harhara continued.<\/p>\n<p>Five students spoke in favor of Principal Fadlallah, allegedly at the request of a district employee. The students who spoke in favor were all leaders in the school, including Ali Barry, the Henry Ford Early College Student Council President.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs your president of the early college student council, I speak today as a representative of the overall student body and bear witness to the undeniable generosity of our principal,\u201d Barry said. \u201c\u2026He not only promotes fostered ethnic diversity in our school and carries every student to their fullest potential, but he treats every student \u2013 every student \u2013 as a child of his own.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1aogtb-QfvIgb-__GhGtsqhPtd7sZyLbIZ0zQKG4MIOc\/edit\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">In a letter released to the district<\/span><\/a>, Principal Majed Fadlallah says that he has always wanted the best for every student, no matter their race or ethnicity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy intent has always been and will continue to be the success and achievement of ALL of my students regardless of their backgrounds, ethnicity, race, or country of origin,\u201d Fadlallah wrote. \u201cMy hope is that I have conveyed and projected that through my actions and work ethics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, he also writes that he apologizes for what he calls \u201cdry humor\u201d that was \u201cnever meant to hurt anyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I every, through words or actions, have made any of my parents, students, staff, or community members feel anything less than the most important thing for me and my work, I apologize,\u201d writes Fadlallah. \u201cJokes and dry humor were always just that and were never meant to hurt anyone. However, I know I should not have done that. I apologize.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The letter also details that former Principal Fadlallah will be working in a different role at Dearborn Public Schools. Although the position itself is not detailed, parents at the Board of Education meeting expressed their worry that the position is a promotion within the Dearborn Public School District, allowing Fadlallah to be rewarded for the allegations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will not be part of the day to day affairs, but I will be concentrating on the big picture,\u201d writes Fadlallah. \u201cI will be guiding the growth and the successful continuation of all of the Early College programs and making them available to even more Dearborn students.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1pw1o9Sv1-4k_Q-dSkzhF6uns24vZGp4BabB305dO8Q4\/edit\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">A letter written Superintendent Glenn Malayko<\/span><\/a> also addresses the issue. In a statement to the district, Malayko asks that residents respect the privacy of Fadlallah while the investigation continues. In the meantime, Marwan Salamey, the former vice principal, will be the acting principal of Henry Ford Early College.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want parents to be assured that all of us are committed to working with the entire HFEC community to make sure students and staff have all of the support they need,\u201d Writes Malayko. \u201cThank you for your continued support of the HFEC, a National Blue Ribbon School.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Want to talk further about this story?
