The Traffic Safety Unit is meant to shift enforcement priorities to address traffic violations as a risk to public health and safety.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur residents have spoken out consistently and clearly about how road safety concerns impact their lives,\u201d said Mayor Abdullah Hammoud. \u201cThis new unit is one piece of a broader strategy to align our public safety goals with those concerns.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Road safety hazards are a serious concern for Dearborn residents. Just last year, a six-year-old girl <span style=\"color: #3366ff\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff\" href=\"https:\/\/www.clickondetroit.com\/news\/local\/2021\/11\/08\/police-6-year-old-girl-killed-in-hit-and-run-crash-in-dearborn\/\">was killed in a hit-and-run<\/a><\/span> accident. Mayor Hammoud\u2019s campaign promised a holistic approach to traffic-calming that included infrastructure and enforcement changes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a department, we\u2019re going to align our enforcement priorities with the issues residents care about,\u201d said Dearborn Police Chief Issa Shahin. \u201cThis unit is about our responsibility to the many families who\u2019ve spoken out about hazardous driving and road safety in their neighborhoods.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>All officers in the new Traffic Safety Unit are trained with the latest technology for traffic enforcement that includes radar and laser devices for tracking the speed of drivers. Even with these departmental updates, the Dearborn Police Department is still looking to expand its traffic-enforcement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Dearborn Police Department is also working to acquire more traffic enforcement equipment and expand training opportunities to everyone in the police department,\u201d said Dan Bartok, Corporal for the Dearborn Police Department.<\/p>\n<p>The Traffic Safety Unit was announced on Feb. 9, with a video linked below that provides more details about the unit.
