With seven city council seats up in the air, and two contenders running after O\u2019Reilly\u2019s position, Dearborn is starting over.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">Along with the shakeup in municipal leadership, voters have decided to push forward with a Charter Commission that will decide on updating the city\u2019s governing document.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">Here\u2019s your guide for who\u2019s running, what\u2019s at stake, and everything you need to know for this year\u2019s election.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Dearborn City Council<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">After whittling down the original 18 candidates seeking a city in Dearborn City Hall, voters soon choose the next seven leaders for the city.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">The four city councilmembers running for reelection \u2013 Michael T. Sareini, Leslie Herrick, Erin Byrnes and Robert Abraham \u2013 all enjoyed a safe margin in the primary election results. But newcomers mixed in the top spots with incumbents.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><strong>Here\u2019s everyone who will be on the Nov. 2 Ballot:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"direction: ltr;\">Robert A. Abraham: Current City Council Member.<\/li>\n<li style=\"direction: ltr;\">Saeid Mashgari Alawathi: Tax expert and service provider for those with disabilities.<\/li>\n<li style=\"direction: ltr;\">Kamal Alsawafy: Community Organizer and Graduate of UofM Dearborn and Wayne State University.<\/li>\n<li style=\"direction: ltr;\">Erin Byrnes: Current City Councilmember and Democratic Engagement Leader for UofM Ann Arbor.<\/li>\n<li style=\"direction: ltr;\">Silvio Davis: Vice President of Dearborn Goodfellows.<\/li>\n<li style=\"direction: ltr;\">Lola Elzein: Entrepreneur and graduate of UofM Dearborn, Cooley Law School and Ross School of Business.<\/li>\n<li style=\"direction: ltr;\">Gary Enos: Bar Owner in Dearborn<\/li>\n<li style=\"direction: ltr;\">Khodr Farhat: Disability Rights Advocate and former candidate for Dearborn Board of Education.<\/li>\n<li style=\"direction: ltr;\">Mustapha Hammoud: Ford Engineer and lifelong Dearborn Resident.<\/li>\n<li style=\"direction: ltr;\">Leslie Herrick: Current City Councilmember and active in city event planning.<\/li>\n<li style=\"direction: ltr;\">Sam Luqman: Southend-based activist running on a campaign to include all of Dearborn in its government.<\/li>\n<li style=\"direction: ltr;\">Khalil Othman: Educated IT Professional and youth-oriented community leader.<\/li>\n<li style=\"direction: ltr;\">Ken Paris: Law Enforcement Veteran running on a public safety and economic platform.<\/li>\n<li style=\"direction: ltr;\">Michael T. Sareini: Current City Council President Pro-Tem.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">(For more information about your candidates, check out the Yemeni American News\u2019 City Council <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/yemeniamerican.com\/en\/know-your-candidates-dearborn-city-council\/\">Candidate Guide<\/a><\/span>).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Dearborn Mayor<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">Two candidates have pushed past the others toward a place in the General Election. Gary Woronchak and Abdullah Hammoud both have been running aggressive campaigns in an effort to lead Dearborn for the next four years.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/votehammoud.com\/\">Abdullah Hammoud<\/a><\/span> is a community activist who currently serves Dearborn as its State Representative in Lansing. His <a href=\"https:\/\/justfacts.votesmart.org\/candidate\/key-votes\/170270\/abdullah-hammoud\/?p=1\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">voting history<\/span><\/a> indicates a continuous thread of forward-thinking votes for the benefit of children and survivors of sexual abuse and human trafficking.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">Hammoud was the first Arab American Representative to be elected for his district. Before being elected to the Michigan House, he worked as a healthcare advisor for the Henry Ford Health System. His platform is based on COVID-19 recovery, Tax Policy and Road Safety.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">Endorsements for Abdullah\u2019s campaign are primarily from local trade union chapters such as the United Auto Workers and International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. Emgage, a Muslim American advocacy group has also endorsed Abdullah\u2019s campaign.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gary4dearborn.com\/\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Gary Woronchak<\/span><\/a> is also a former State Representative for the same district and former editor for the Dearborn Press &amp; Guide. His work as a County Commissioner led to new ordinances to address ethics issues in public office, such as a cap on severance pay and plugging the holes for secret deals.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">Woronchak is running on a campaign of strong leadership, saying \u201cif the city\u2019s biggest problem changes with the moment, then Dearborn\u2019s most pressing concern is having strong and effective leadership.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">Fundraising for the campaigns has led to a big disparity, with Hammoud raising close to $550,000 and Woronchak at just below $100,000.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>City-Wide Proposal<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">The Ballot Language was approved for a proposed millage that would prevent disruptions in city services, but cost tax-payers an average of $167 each year \u2013 or $2.75 per $1,000 of taxable value.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">According to the Ballot Proposal\u2019s language, unless the millage passes, \u201cprograms and service levels will be diminished.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">The millage would last for 3 years, starting July 1, 2022 and ending on June 30, 2025.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Charter Commissioners<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">Voters in the August primary decided that the city\u2019s charter would be put under review by a commission. The commission will decide how the City\u2019s governing document is updated and revised to better serve the city\u2019s residents.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><strong>There are 22 candidates who are campaigning for nine available spots on the Charter Commission:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"direction: ltr; text-align: left;\">Albert Abbas<\/li>\n<li style=\"direction: ltr; text-align: left;\">Hassan F. Abdallah<\/li>\n<li style=\"direction: ltr; text-align: left;\">Gussan Abdulkarim<\/li>\n<li style=\"direction: ltr; text-align: left;\">Richard AlAziz<\/li>\n<li style=\"direction: ltr; text-align: left;\">Elizabeth Bailey<\/li>\n<li style=\"direction: ltr; text-align: left;\">Mark J. Dawdy<\/li>\n<li style=\"direction: ltr; text-align: left;\">Laura Dudgeon<\/li>\n<li style=\"direction: ltr; text-align: left;\">Sharon L. Dulmage<\/li>\n<li style=\"direction: ltr; text-align: left;\">Hussein Hachem<\/li>\n<li style=\"direction: ltr; text-align: left;\">Sam Hamade<\/li>\n<li style=\"direction: ltr; text-align: left;\">Timothy S. Harrison<\/li>\n<li style=\"direction: ltr; text-align: left;\">Cheryl D.
