{"id":5278,"date":"2021-07-27T13:25:17","date_gmt":"2021-07-27T17:25:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/yemeniamerican.com\/en\/?p=5278"},"modified":"2021-07-29T17:04:36","modified_gmt":"2021-07-29T21:04:36","slug":"american-arab-and-muslim-political-action-committee-releases-endorsements","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/yemeniamerican.com\/en\/american-arab-and-muslim-political-action-committee-releases-endorsements\/","title":{"rendered":"American Arab and Muslim Political Action Committee Releases Endorsements"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"direction: ltr\">By Simon Albaugh \u2013 Yemeni American News<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr\">Dearborn, Mich. \u2013 In a heated midterm election, the American Arab and Muslim Political Action Committee (AMPAC) has released its list of endorsements for races in Dearborn, Westland, Taylor, Detroit, Hamtramck and Dearborn Heights.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr\">The endorsements &#8211; which are the product of a long process of interviewing candidates, along with internal deliberations \u2013 highlighted 14 candidates for their respective races.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr\">In Dearborn, AMPAC placed Susan Dabaja as the most promising candidate for Dearborn City Mayor. In the Dearborn City Council Race, Kamel Elkadri, Khalil Othman, Khodr Farhat, Leslie Herrick, Mike Sareini, Said Alawathi and Samra Luqman all earned an endorsement from AMPAC.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr\">Imad Hamad, who spoke on behalf of the President of AMPAC, says this all falls under a singular purpose for the organization.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr\">\u201cAMPAC was founded in order to empower, mobilize and organize the Arab Muslim communities at large, and to help educate and inform,\u201d Hamad said. \u201cAnd yet advance the involvement and participation in elections \u2013 local, state, federal, primary, general etc.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr\">Making endorsements and meeting with candidates is just one part of a larger mission for AMPAC \u2013 improving voter engagement. According to the Michigan Secretary of State, voter turnout in Michigan can oftentimes be abysmal, with just barely more than half of voting-age residents voting in federal and state elections.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr\">\u201cFirst, we have to keep in mind that voter registration and actual voting and participation are key issues facing the nation,\u201d Hamad said. \u201cHow many people are eligible to register to vote and how many are registered to vote, yet they don\u2019t practice this civic duty? I think we\u2019re going to do our best to help advance the participation and spread more education and awareness, so people can take the voting aspect seriously.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr\">In other down-ballot elections, AMPAC has endorsed Tasha Green for Westland Mayor and Candi Halton for Westland City Council, Alex Garcia for Mayor of Taylor, Frederick Dural for Detroit City Council, Amanda Jaczkowski for Hamtramck City Council and Lisa Hicks for Dearborn Heights Treasurer.<\/p>\n<div class='clear '><\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"By Simon Albaugh \u2013 Yemeni American News Dearborn, Mich. \u2013 In a heated midterm election, the American Arab and Muslim Political Action Committee (AMPAC) has released its list of endorsements for races in Dearborn, Westland, Taylor, Detroit, Hamtramck and Dearborn Heights.
