{"id":5066,"date":"2021-05-19T16:04:35","date_gmt":"2021-05-19T20:04:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/yemeniamerican.com\/en\/?p=5066"},"modified":"2021-05-19T18:31:22","modified_gmt":"2021-05-19T22:31:22","slug":"arab-americans-demand-better-from-bidens-policy-on-israel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/yemeniamerican.com\/en\/arab-americans-demand-better-from-bidens-policy-on-israel\/","title":{"rendered":"Arab Americans Demand Better from Biden\u2019s Policy on Israel"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Simon Albaugh \u2013 Yemeni American News<\/p>\n<p>Dearborn, Mich. \u2013 Sparked by Biden\u2019s support for Israel in recent escalations of violence, Arab Americans showed up in the thousands to express their frustration during Biden\u2019s visit to Ford Motor Company\u2019s headquarters.<\/p>\n<p>Over the past weeks, escalating tensions between the Israeli military and Palestinian Militants in Gaza have resulted in a humanitarian disaster for Gazan civilians. Facing heavy bombardment from the Israeli military, essential civilian infrastructure in Gaza has been destroyed, leaving <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2021\/05\/17\/huge-loss-israels-killing-top-doctors-further-strains-overwhelmed-gaza-health-system\">medical systems<\/a><\/span> in the Palestinian enclave further overwhelmed and media infrastructure offline.<\/p>\n<p>Although President Joe Biden has maintained his support for Israel, today he began making small steps to quell the violence, calling for \u201c<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/05\/19\/biden-tells-israels-netanyahu-us-expects-a-significant-de-escalation-today-in-gaza.html\">a significant de-escalation today<\/a><\/span>.\u201d Meanwhile, progressive democratic congressmembers have introduced a resolution <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/defense\/554342-ocasio-cortez-leading-effort-to-block-arms-sale-to-israel\">attempting to block $735 million arms sale to Israel<\/a><\/span> that Biden himself approved just days ago.<\/p>\n<p>Leaders in Dearborn, including Palestinian-American Comedian Amer Zahr and Osama Siblani, publisher of the Arab American News, organized a rally at the Dearborn Police Station. The rally, which was within eyesight of the Ford Company\u2019s Dearborn Headquarters, called for Biden to take stronger action against what Palestinian Americans perceive to be an asymmetrical force against their people in Gaza.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-5069\" src=\"https:\/\/yemeniamerican.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/05\/76545836-D53D-486F-A61D-E89E2475043E_1_105_c-300x200.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/yemeniamerican.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/05\/76545836-D53D-486F-A61D-E89E2475043E_1_105_c-300x200.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/yemeniamerican.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/05\/76545836-D53D-486F-A61D-E89E2475043E_1_105_c-1024x683.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/yemeniamerican.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/05\/76545836-D53D-486F-A61D-E89E2475043E_1_105_c-768x512.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/yemeniamerican.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/05\/76545836-D53D-486F-A61D-E89E2475043E_1_105_c.jpeg 1086w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Dearborn Police estimated 3,000 demonstrators protested at President Biden&#8217;s Tuesday visit.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>So far, more than 200 people have lost their life in the escalation of the conflict, with the vast majority being Palestinians.<\/p>\n<p>Protesters marched in 80 degree heat down Michigan Avenue, chanting for an end to the asymmetrical violence. Some, like Mohammad \u2013 who asked not to include his last name \u2013 came out in support of family overseas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen they&#8217;re overseas, they&#8217;re getting bombed and getting attacked,\u201d Mohammad said. \u201cNothing&#8217;s changing. The least we could do here, living comfortably in our homes and living in our cared for environment is come out here and say something, try to make a change in whatever way we can.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Others, like Sannid Saleh have taken a more direct approach to quelling the conflict. On his first assignment with the Red Crescent Society, he recalls going to a protest and having to stack bodies in ambulances.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo when we got there, and the first thing I saw was people with signs chanting, marching, making their voices heard,\u201d Sannid said. \u201cThe moment they hit a certain point &#8211; which is an invisible line for the Israelis that they&#8217;ve made up within their own heads that the average person will not know &#8211; gunfire pretty much erupted. Within a few moments, there was 30 injured and multiple people who were unconscious from tear gas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Saleh says he\u2019s been told never to come back by the Israeli military, that he\u2019s been branded on his arm by the heated barrel of a rifle, and that he\u2019s been beaten over and over on his trips overseas. But he says this won\u2019t stop him from speaking out. In fact, he says it didn\u2019t stop him from protesting the next day of his trip in the Occupied Palestinian Territories.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe next day I was out, and I said \u2018if I was if I&#8217;m to die today, I&#8217;m dying in a cause I believe,\u2019\u201d Saleh said. \u201cThat&#8217;s why a lot of these people [in Dearborn] are doing the same thing. They come here while their own families have died overseas, their own families are suffering. So the least we can do in a safe environment is let our voices be heard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The protest organized for Biden\u2019s visit was just one of <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/yemeniamerican.com\/en\/weekend-protests-demand-an-end-to-violence-in-gaza\/\">a series of protests that have erupted over the past week<\/a><\/span>.
