{"id":4938,"date":"2021-04-14T13:19:17","date_gmt":"2021-04-14T17:19:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/yemeniamerican.com\/en\/?p=4938"},"modified":"2021-04-19T16:39:19","modified_gmt":"2021-04-19T20:39:19","slug":"perrotta-resigns-from-hamtramck-city-council","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/yemeniamerican.com\/en\/perrotta-resigns-from-hamtramck-city-council\/","title":{"rendered":"Perrotta Resigns from Hamtramck City Council"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">By Simon Albaugh \u2013 Yemeni American News<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">HAMTRAMCK, Mich. \u2013 Hamtramck councilman Ian Perrotta resigned soon after last night\u2019s meeting, citing a list of concerns.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">In a 2,200 word statement that was cut off by Mayor Karen Majewski, Perrotta listed a number of grievances he had with other City Councilmembers as the reason for his resignation. Those grievances stem from a recall effort, two censures and other challenges he perceives from the City Council.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">\u201cMr. Hassan and the rest of the council in on the recall election, even though your 180 days to reject me are up, I can still reject you,\u201d Perrotta wrote at the end of the post. \u201cAnd I do. Effective immediately, I resign from my position on the Hamtramck City Council.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">A recall effort to remove Councilman Perrotta began last October, with a press release saying that the effort had reached the necessary signatures by Oct. 26. The effort cites a censure for what members of the Hamtramck community called <a href=\"https:\/\/detroit.cbslocal.com\/2017\/09\/11\/hamtramck-councilman-blames-trash-problem-on-immigrants\/\">racially insensitive remarks about trash disposal<\/a>. Later, another censure resulted from Perrotta\u2019s hostile remarks to a city employee.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">However, the recall effort coincided with a ballot initiative, led by Councilman Hassan, to dissolve the charter language for the police and fire department. In <a href=\"https:\/\/yemeniamerican.com\/en\/video-shows-dirty-politics-in-hamtramck-councilman-recall-effort-and-public-safety-vote\/\">a video posted by Councilman Hassan<\/a>, a number of former city officials are seen discussing how to dissolve the police and fire department, saying that the support for Ian Perrotta must end in order to push the ballot initiative forward.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">When called for comment, Councilman Hassan hung up on the Yemeni American News.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">Perrotta\u2019s resignation marks the second City Councilmember to resign within a year. The previous City Councilmember to resign, Andrea Karpinski, resigned after a resolution to regulate marijuana dispensaries was struck down with little debate. In a later city council meeting, Councilmembers reintroduced a nearly identical resolution for the regulation of marijuana dispensaries, which passed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">\u201cSometimes when life hands you lemons, the juice just isn\u2019t worth the squeeze,\u201d Perrotta wrote. \u201cThe fruit of this poisonous tree that is Hamtramck Politics has soured my taste for public service and proven too toxic to continue to tolerate. Exacerbating this feeling is the apparent impotence that the current class of leadership in Hamtramck has displayed throughout this ordeal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">It\u2019s unclear now who will be appointed to former Councilman Perrotta\u2019s empty seat. In the previous resignation, the City Council appointed Saad Almasmari to replace former Councilmember Andrea Karpinski.
