At noon today, Joe Biden became the 46th<\/sup> president of the United States of America, with the peaceful transition of power being upheld for another administration. This brings a new era for American politics, as President Trump leaves the white house for the final time.<\/p>\n

On this day, when the former vice president takes the highest office in the country and when the first women, the first African American and the first Asian American takes the second-highest duty in the country, people throughout Michigan have remarked on the historical significance of this moment.<\/p>\n

Wayne County Executive Warren C. Evans remarked on the significance of this moment for women of color, saying that this \u201cshatters the glass ceiling.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cToday is one we should celebrate as a nation,\u201d said Warren C. Evans, Wayne County Executive, in a Press Release. \u201cThe constitution and democracy endure. Additionally, the inauguration of a woman of color as Vice President \u2013 the first woman to hold elected office in the executive branch \u2013 not only shatters the glass ceiling but ensures all Americans have a seat at the table of power.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2026The success of President Biden and Vice President Harris will be a success we all share. My administration and I look forward to working with the Biden-Harris team in any way possible to improve the lives of Wayne County residents.\u201d<\/p>\n

Governor Whitmer, who worked as part of a bipartisan committee for the presidential inauguration. Before the inauguration, she spoke glowingly on what she expects to see from the Biden Administration after lamenting the last year\u2019s impact on the country and the State of Michigan.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe as a nation recognize the transfer of power,\u201d said Governor Gretchen Whitmer. \u201cToday is an important moment. It is certainly in the middle of a pandemic. It\u2019s in the middle of what we\u2019ve seen as domestic terror threats. And yet, we must move forward.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I know that Joe Biden is the right person at the right time. Kamala Harris to be his right hand\u2026 I just think that this is a chance for us to talk about how we unify this nation, how we take on domestic terrorism, how we address racial inequity and get our kids back in school and get our people back to work. But it starts with getting our arms around this virus.\u201d<\/p>\n

Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan released a statement when he first heard of Joe Biden\u2019s winning the election. After the Obama Administration\u2019s work to refuel the American auto manufacturing giants of Detroit, the heartfelt words seem to be an act of reciprocation.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe historic election of Joe Biden as our next president will have a tremendous positive impact on America, on Michigan and on the City of Detroit,\u201d Mayor Duggan said. \u201cPresident-elect Biden was a friend to Detroit when we were down, helping save our auto industry and helping our city recover from bankruptcy.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe look forward to President Joe Biden, and Vice President Kamala Harris uniting our country and building a much brighter future.\u201d<\/p>\n
