{"id":4423,"date":"2020-12-22T11:34:46","date_gmt":"2020-12-22T15:34:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/yemeniamerican.com\/en\/?p=4423"},"modified":"2020-12-22T14:56:30","modified_gmt":"2020-12-22T18:56:30","slug":"dearborn-hamtramck-mourn-sheriff-benny-napoleon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/yemeniamerican.com\/en\/dearborn-hamtramck-mourn-sheriff-benny-napoleon\/","title":{"rendered":"Dearborn &amp; Hamtramck Mourn Sheriff Benny Napoleon"},"content":{"rendered":"<div dir=\"auto\" style=\"text-align: right;\">(Photo by Bill Chapman Photography, LLC)<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<p>By Brian Stone &#8211; Yemeni American News<\/p>\n<p>DEARBORN, Mich. &#8211; Wayne County Sheriff Benny Napoleon was remembered by local community and civic leaders with a flood of spoken memories, kind words and public mourning after he died from complications related to COVID 19 on December 17th.<\/p>\n<p>Many leaders spoke personally of experiences they had with Napoleon, while others focused on the impact he had on public life in Wayne County.<\/p>\n<p>Dearborn Police Chief Ronald Haddad spoke personally of his time on the force in Detroit with Napoleon, \u201cSheriff Napoleon and I went up through the ranks in Detroit together starting with sergeant in 1983. Benny always had a way of making us just a little bit better. [He was] one of a kind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Former Dearborn Wayne County Commissioner Gary Woronchak had fond memories from working with Napoleon for more than a decade, first when he was advising the Wayne county executive, and later when Napoleon was a county Sheriff.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI particularly appreciated how he interacted with citizens at my senior events,\u201d said Woronchak. \u201cBenny had an undeniable charisma and could have reached for much higher office if he wanted.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-4435\" src=\"http:\/\/yemeniamerican.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/12\/Photo-by-Gary-Woronchak-300x236.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"236\" srcset=\"https:\/\/yemeniamerican.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/12\/Photo-by-Gary-Woronchak-300x236.jpg 300w, https:\/\/yemeniamerican.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/12\/Photo-by-Gary-Woronchak.jpg 721w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<p>(Photo by Gary Woronchak)<\/p>\n<p>Current Dearborn Wayne County Commissioner Sam Baydoun spoke broadly about Napoleon\u2019s service to the community, \u201cWayne County lost a giant tonight. He will be missed by his family, friends, colleagues and all the people he knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hamtramck Mayor Karen Majewski seemed to express frustration with a year where many of Hamtramck\u2019s public servants have been lost to the virus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#8217;ve lost another good one,\u201d said Majewski.<\/p>\n<p>Many local community leaders also expressed dismay and sadness upon the passing of Napoleon, with many reflecting on the ways in which Napoleon encouraged diversity in the ranks of the county sheriffs department.<\/p>\n<p>Imad Hamad, in a statement through the American Human Rights Council, said Napoleon\u2019s public service was critical to ensuring the sheriffs department looked like the community it served.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSheriff Napoleon was a passionate and dedicated law enforcement leader who earned the respect and the admiration of the public as well as his law enforcement partners. He was a great man and great officer who served his community, city, state and country all his life.\u00a0 He will be missed and our condolences go to his family who will spend the holidays without him.
