{"id":23,"date":"2017-07-22T22:53:02","date_gmt":"2017-07-22T19:53:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/yemeniamerican.com\/en\/?p=23"},"modified":"2017-07-22T23:22:35","modified_gmt":"2017-07-22T20:22:35","slug":"hamtramck-under-turmoil-looking-for-a-new-city-manager","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/yemeniamerican.com\/en\/hamtramck-under-turmoil-looking-for-a-new-city-manager\/","title":{"rendered":"Hamtramck under turmoil looking for a new City Manager"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Omar Thabet<br \/>\nThe Yemeni American News<br \/>\nOn Tuesday, June 27th, the Receivership Transition Advisory Board (RTAB) unanimously voted down to hire Kyle Tertzag as Hamtramck\u2019s interim City Manager.<\/p>\n<p>Tertzag was set to replace former City Manager Katrina Powell. At a recent board meeting, majority of Hamtramck\u2019s City Council voted not to renew Powell\u2019s contract after it expired on June 30th.<br \/>\nNow Hamtramck is left with a vacancy at the City Manager position.<br \/>\nThe RTAB must approve of all City Council\u2019s actions since Hamtramck is still considered to be under a financial emergency.<br \/>\nTwo councilmembers who were in favor of renewing Powell\u2019s contract were Andrea Karpinski and Ian Perrotta.<br \/>\nDuring the RTAB meeting, Karpinski stated that, \u201c Ms. Powell has been proven to do well for the city of Hamtramck and to get us in a positive place.\u201d<br \/>\nIan Perrota followed Karpinski at the RTAB. Perrota believes the other councilmembers violated the Open Meetings Act.<br \/>\nPerrota stated, \u201cWhy would the majority council members suddenly and simultaneously decide to not move forward with the current city manager?\u201d<br \/>\nPerrota then asked, \u201cWhy would they approve of a City Manager that has faults similar to the current one they are trying to replace?\u201d<br \/>\nThose who opposed renewing Powell\u2019s contract and were in favor of Kyle Tertzag were councilmembers Anam Miah, Abu Musa, Saad Almasmari, and Mohammed Hassan.<br \/>\nDuring the RTAB meeting, Miah stated, \u201cTertzag has performed well in this position before. Any talk about his qualifications can not disparate this fact.\u201d<br \/>\nSaad Almasmari also spoke during the meeting. He stated, \u201cEver since we voted down to renewing Katrina Powell\u2019s contract, she started using her power for her own personal interest. That is not right.\u201d<br \/>\nTertzag is a familiar face within the Hamtramck area.<br \/>\nHe was hired in 2012 to become the acting City Manager for Hamtramck.
