{"id":1752,"date":"2018-08-04T23:09:34","date_gmt":"2018-08-04T20:09:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/yemeniamerican.com\/en\/?p=1752"},"modified":"2018-09-10T23:41:40","modified_gmt":"2018-09-10T20:41:40","slug":"our-10th-anniversary-community-and-officials-praise-yemeni-american-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/yemeniamerican.com\/en\/our-10th-anniversary-community-and-officials-praise-yemeni-american-news\/","title":{"rendered":""},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>DEARBORN- The Yemeni American News<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Activists, politicians, writers and community members praised the Yemeni American News\u2019 committed journalism at the newspaper\u2019s 10th anniversary ceremony at the Arab American National Museum on Friday, July 27.<\/p>\n<p>Several elected officials came forward with awards to the newspaper\u2019s publisher Rasheed Alnozili on Friday.<br \/>\nRep. Debbie Dingell presented Alnozili with a recognition from the US Congress. She recalled the beginnings of YAN a decade ago and highlighted the publication\u2019s importance to the community.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1756\" src=\"http:\/\/yemeniamerican.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/08\/2-300x256.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"256\" srcset=\"https:\/\/yemeniamerican.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/08\/2-300x256.jpg 300w, https:\/\/yemeniamerican.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/08\/2-768x654.jpg 768w, https:\/\/yemeniamerican.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/08\/2-1024x872.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/yemeniamerican.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/08\/2.jpg 1992w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><br \/>\n\u201cWe\u2019re living in very strange times,\u201d Dingell said. \u201cPeople are trying to divide us, pit us against each other. Freedom of speech, freedom of religion and freedom of the press have never been more important. I never thought at this point of my life we would be fighting for all of these fundamental pillars of the Constitution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The congresswoman congratulated YAN and urged her constituents to \u201cstick together\u201d to withstand divisive rhetoric.<br \/>\n\u201cIt\u2019s really wonderful to be a part of this community,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Dearborn Mayor Jack O\u2019Reilly said the city would be a \u201cdifferent community\u201d without YAN\u2019s journalism.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe owe a lot to the fact that they (YAN staff) have the vision and dedication to make sure that the truth did get out,\u201d O\u2019Reilly said.<\/p>\n<p>He added that the newspaper has been a tool for informing people and dispel false information.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis has been a blessing for everyone because it has been a fair and very well-developed place to get information and understand what\u2019s really going on,\u201d the mayor continued.<\/p>\n<p>O\u2019Reilly presented YAN with an award on behalf of his office and the Dearborn City Council.<\/p>\n<p>Kevin Hrit, the regional director for US Senator Gary Peters, stressed the importance of relations between elected officials and the communities they serve in these \u201cserious times.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s why it\u2019s so important that we have a free and fair press, so really we owe a round of applause for Rasheed and his whole team for doing this work &#8211; telling the truth and getting it out there,\u201d Hirt said.<\/p>\n<p>He added that people need to stand together and speak in one voice against the Trump administration\u2019s unAmerican policies. \u201cThis community is doing that, and Rasheed, thank you for leading the way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hirt presented a tribute to YAN on behalf of Senator Peters.<br \/>\nWayne County Commissioner Gary Woronchak and State Rep. Sylvia Santana who are both running for the state Senate also awarded YAN with recognitions from their respective offices.<\/p>\n<p>Woronchak, a former journalist, said the press is vital for democracy, but it is difficult to \u201cmake ends meet\u201d for newspapers in today\u2019s digital world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut somehow Rasheed and the Yemeni American News have done that. For that, I\u2019m grateful and I wish you many more years,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Santana called YAN\u2019s anniversary a \u201cbeautiful occasion\u201d.<br \/>\nThe state representative said it is important to shield local communities from the \u201cnegativity\u201d at the national level with promoting understanding.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just want to say, thank you so much for what you do &#8211; putting information out in the community because information is powerful and we want positive information in our communities,\u201d Santana said addressing Alnozili.<br \/>\nZaineb Hussein, director of Diversity and Inclusion for Wayne County, presented an award to YAN on behalf of Wayne County CEO Warren Evans.<\/p>\n<p>Hussein said the newspaper has a unique flavor, comparing it to the distinctive taste of Yemeni food.<br \/>\n\u201cIt\u2019s genuine; it\u2019s all about educating the people who are reading this paper. I am so amazed by how much it has developed over time,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Kipp Cozad, a lecturer Moraine Valley Community College in Illinois who writes for YAN, joined the celebration all the way from Chicago.<\/p>\n<p>Cozad, who had lived in Yemen, talked about his bond with the country and the local community.<br \/>\n\u201cIt has been such a pleasure to write for the Yemeni American News over these years,\u201d Cozad said, calling the paper an \u201cengine of information.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cozad said Trump\u2019s Muslim ban, which includes Yemen, brings him \u201cso much pain.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cKnowing the Yemeni community so well, I can\u2019t think of a community less deserving of that,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>YAN took the opportunity to honour Yemeni American businessman Mohammed Hassan, who is known as Abu Sinan, for his entrepreneurial spirit and giving back to the community.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1759\" src=\"http:\/\/yemeniamerican.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/08\/3-216x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"216\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/yemeniamerican.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/08\/3-216x300.jpg 216w, https:\/\/yemeniamerican.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/08\/3.jpg 431w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 216px) 100vw, 216px\" \/>Abu Sinan, who owns Alnawras Restaurant, thanked people who have contributed to his success, including his staff and business partner partner Abu Fahd.<\/p>\n<p>Alnozili, who started the YAN a decade ago to amplify the voices of the Yemeni community after he had witnessed claims that 9\/11 should be blamed on Yemenis, said he feels blessed and lauded his staff for reaching this milestone.<br \/>\n\u201cI am lucky to have the right team,\u201d he said. \u201cI hope we can continue to grow and create more jobs, especially in Yemen. We want to move forward with the same commitment and motivation, while improving where we can.
