{"id":1080,"date":"2016-06-12T23:46:41","date_gmt":"2016-06-12T20:46:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/yemeniamerican.com\/en\/?p=1080"},"modified":"2017-11-12T23:49:38","modified_gmt":"2017-11-12T20:49:38","slug":"expert-marjorie-ransom-talks-about-yemeni-silver-jewelry-arab-museum-celebrates-yemeni-culture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/yemeniamerican.com\/en\/expert-marjorie-ransom-talks-about-yemeni-silver-jewelry-arab-museum-celebrates-yemeni-culture\/","title":{"rendered":"Expert Marjorie Ransom talks about Yemeni Silver Jewelry:\u00a0Arab Museum celebrates Yemeni culture"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On Friday, May 13, the Arab American National Museum in Dearborn welcomed back its great friend,<\/p>\n<p>Yemeni silver jewelry expert Marjorie Ransom, who delivered a fascinating talk entitled Jewelry<\/p>\n<p>Empowering Women: A Yemeni Story.\u00a0 She shared selections from her jewelry collection in person and<\/p>\n<p>via a slide presentation.\u00a0 Her talked covered the history of jewelry-making, how women use their silver,<\/p>\n<p>the silver makers, and the differences in all of these across Yemen.<\/p>\n<p>Ransom also introduced her new book, Silver Treasures from the Land Of Sheba: Regional Yemeni<\/p>\n<p>Jewelry\u00a0 (The American University in Cairo Press, 2014), which highlights her vast knowledge and 30-year<\/p>\n<p>experience in studying the art of traditional Yemeni silver jewelry.<\/p>\n<p>The entire event was very well received by the 40 guests in the Museum\u2019s Russell J. Ebeid Library &amp;<\/p>\n<p>Resource Center. The audience was diverse: Yemeni families, non-Arabs, Korean students and people of<\/p>\n<p>all ages.\u00a0 Prior to her talk, Ransom enjoyed one-on-one conversations with Professor Andrew Shryock,<\/p>\n<p>Rasheed Alnozili \u2013 publisher of the Yemeni American News, along with Ali Baleed Almaklani (ACCESS<\/p>\n<p>Board member and Executive Director of Yemen American Benevolent Association) and other attendees.<\/p>\n<p>The AANM is very grateful to Fawzy Alghazali, the owner of Mocha Caf\u00e9, who sponsored the reception<\/p>\n<p>following Ransom\u2019s talk. It was Arabic hospitality and generosity at its best, with a delicious spread of<\/p>\n<p>dinner and dessert that delighted the guests. More very gracious hospitality was shown to Ransom and<\/p>\n<p>her entourage during a later dinner at Sheeba, where owner Ismael Aljahmi served the party and shared<\/p>\n<p>great conversations over dinner.<\/p>\n<p>The jewelry event was followed by lively Global Fridays concert by Abdulrahman Al Akhfash, an expert in<\/p>\n<p>Yemeni traditional music. The performance also featured Yemeni traditional dancers and some young, up<\/p>\n<p>and coming talent.
