NEWS RELEASE

The School District asked for suggestions from the community for naming the school. Thirty people responded in writing via google docs. Numerous others responded verbally. Thanks to all that did respond. After much debate and serious thought, the Hamtramck Board of Education passed a resolution by a 7-0 vote to name the schoolTAU BETA SCHOOL on November 21, 2017.

The name was chosen based on historical reasons. In 1916 the Tau Beta Association established a Community House on Hanley Street in Hamtramck to help immigrant families.  The Community House provided a day nursey, clinic and the first and only library in Hamtramck at the time.  The Community House became one of finest in the country and was studied, copied and praised by many civic leaders.

The Hamtramck Board of Education wants present day immigrant families to have a welcoming school that supports them emotionally and physically as well as academically. Similar to what was offered to immigrants in the 1900’s. A place that is safe and is understanding of the needs of immigrants. The School District of the City of Hamtramck will work diligently to meet those needs.
