New Agreement Brings Expanded Technical Education to Hamtramck Public Schools

When Hamtramck Public Schools’ (HPS) 5-year partnership with Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD) ended after the 2025 school year, HPS officials knew they had to find a way to continue vocational and technical education opportunities.

The former partnership, funded by a grant from the state of Michigan, gave HPS students access to limited programs at DPSCD’s Randolph Career Technical Center.

HPS High School Principal Lawrence Stroughter, HPS Adult Education Principal Nuo Ivezaj, HPS High School Assistant Principal Ayanna Dance, Counselors Sarah Russo and Shy’Lexia Hill, Executive Director of Student Achievement Heather Kuehneman and Interim Superintendent/CFO Jim Larson-Shidler recently visited the Randolph campus to explore future opportunities for HPS students. This visit resulted in a new partnership that will provide HPS students with open access to all Randolph and Breithaupt Career Technical programs.

“We’re thrilled for this new partnership,” said HPS Board of Education President Abdulmalik Algahaim. “Looking ahead, I’m committed to expanding these opportunities even further—bringing more career and technical programs to our city through strong collaboration with many stakeholders.”

The new partnership will allow HPS students to:

  • Build in-demand technical skills in fields like automotive, healthcare, culinary arts, and more.
  • Participate in internships and gain real-world experience.
  • Secure high-paying skilled trades jobs immediately after graduation.

The program is open to HPS students in 10th – 12th grades in good academic standing. Interested students should discuss enrollment with their counselor.

Courses are 1 or 2 years and students can choose from Auto Service, Welding, Cosmetology, Graphics & Printing, Culinary Arts, Auto Collision and Mechatronics.

“We’re proud to build a future where every student has the tools, training, and support to thrive,” Algahaim said.
